Republic of Ireland's world cup qualification
Ben Smyth,
The Republic of Ireland’s men's national team were drawn in a group with Georgia, Moldova, Serbia, Wales and Austria. My prediction for the standings of the group when the teams were drawn, was that Austria and Wales would compete for first and second place in the group, with Ireland coming third followed by serbia in fourth, Georgia in fifth and Moldova finishing last.
Ireland got qualification off to a good start with four wins out of four, getting a huge result in Vienna beating austria with a 1-0 result coming from a James McClean goal in the 48th minute. Ireland also went to Belgrade to record a 2-2 draw against the current group leaders and expected automatic qualifiers, Serbia.
Wales broke Ireland's winning streak with a 0-0 draw in the aviva stadium, but Ireland's unbeaten record stayed intact. But the winning streak wasn’t the only thing they broke. In the 69th minute, Neil Taylor received a red card for a tackle that broke Seamus Coleman’s leg which in my opinion has hindered Ireland’s Qualification.
Ireland then endured two frustrating draws, one coming at home to Austria, finishing 1-1, but it could have finished in an Irish win, as we had one or two penalty claims and a goal disallowed for contact on the austrian goalkeeper.
In the most recent international break, Ireland received one point out of what I expected to be four. Their poorest performance in the group, in most of the public's opinion came away to the worst ranked team, Georgia, in a 1-1 draw in Tbilisi. The second game in the most recent break was Ireland's second last home game against group leaders, Serbia. In my mind a draw or win would have been a good result but Alexsander Kolarov broke irish hearts smashing a goal in, in the 55th minute. Wales beat ‘the whipping boys’, Moldova, 2-0 to take second position in the group.
Based on the most recent results, I believe that Serbia will definitely win automatic qualification to Russia in 2018 and the winner of Ireland’s final game against Wales will take 2nd place and play a play-off against a 2nd placed team from Group A,B,C,E,F,G,H or I.
Whoever qualifies for the world cup, the qualifying campaign has had ups and downs, it has been tense and relaxed, it has exciting but never been boring.
